Job Description

This position supervises a regional estimating staff, assigns bids to estimators, reviews and prepares job estimates and bids, develops job schedules and forecasts, completes take-offs, site reviews, and customer interactions related to the project. This position works and negotiates with potential subcontractors during the estimating phase and works closely with the Project Management team to ensure customer needs are being met and jobs are being awarded.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the position include, but not limited to:

  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Directly supervise the team. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; providing feedback; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Assign bids- Review project proposals or plans to understand the scope of the work and deliverables for assigning bids to estimators.
  • Assist in the development and training of estimators.
  • Review bid requirements, ensuring all aspects of the project are documented and accounted for. Prepare take-offs and work with Procurement department to secure vendor pricing.
  • Facilitate the resolution of complex problems associated with the bid/project.
  • Work with other lead estimators to develop and promote best practices.
  • Promote “One Michels” concept throughout all levels of the Region.
  • Promote and elevate Michels culture and core values.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include prior estimating experience in electrical utility construction specifically transmission lines, distribution lines, and underground power and telecommunications. Prior management experience is preferred. Applicants must be able to handle multiple projects at one time, possess the ability to successfully negotiate terms and conditions, manage tight deadlines, demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication to collaborate with various levels of management and proficiency in computer software skills specifically with estimating and job cost tracking software.
